Carissa Grandiflora - Natal Pflaume

FAQ - 💬

❓ Is Carissa toxic?

👉 The Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) is a member of the Dogbane or Apocynaceae family. A relative of the poisonous Oleander, the stems and leaves of the Natal plum are toxic and should never be consumed. The fruit of the Natal plum shrub is the only edible part of the plant.

❓ Is Natal Plum the same as boxwood?

👉 Boxwood Beauty also known as the Natal Plum shrubs are great for small areas or bordering your landscape (botanical name is Carissa Macrocarpa). This is a short shrub with small round clustered dark green leaves that gets to be about 1-3 feet tall and can get up to 3-6 foot wide.

❓ What do num num berries taste like?

👉 They taste like a slightly sweet cranberry with the texture of a ripe strawberry — some say like a sightly unripe cherry.

❓ Can you propagate a Natal Plum?

👉 Natal plum is easy to propagate using stem cuttings which can be taken at any time of the year. Select 4- to 6-inch cuttings, treat them with rooting hormone, and either insert them in moist sand or place them in a glass of water.

❓ Is Carissa poisonous to dogs?

👉 The botanical name for that family is Apocynaceae which is Greek for “keep it away from the dog” meaning it kills them easily. It does us, too. Nearly all parts of the Natal Plum are poisonous, like the Oleander, except for the red-ripe fruit.

❓ Is Carissa toxic to dogs?

👉 Most of its parts are highly poisonous, except for the fruit's flesh when fully ripe. This could be why the botanical name of the Natal plums' family (Apocynaceae) means “keep it away from the dog” in Greek.

❓ How do you prune natal plum?

👉 You can trim your Natal plum Bonsai anytime of the year. Do major pruning in mid to late spring, after flowering. Do not prune all the green foliage off a branch, as this will cause the branch to die back. Otherwise, you will find that it tends to bud back with vigor.

❓ How big does a natal plum grow?

👉 This dense, spreading plant will reach a height of only 12 to 18 inches. The natal plum has small, leathery, ovoid leaves that are dark green in color accompanied by sharp, bifurcate (forked) spines about 1 ½ inches long. White, star-shaped flowers that are 2 inches wide appear throughout the plant in the spring.

❓ How do you eat Carissa fruit?

👉 The carissa must be fully ripe, dark-red and slightly soft to the touch to be eaten raw. If the fruit is harvested too soon, the flesh will exude acrid white latex.

❓ How poisonous is Natal plum?

👉 Some claim the leaves and stems of the plant are poisonous, especially to animals. However, this is a myth — the latex in Carissa is non-toxic [according to the South African National Biodiversity Institute's plant information website, plantzafrica.com].

❓ How fast does Carissa grow?

👉 The fruit matures in approximately 60 days, yielding most of its fruit in the summer. Carissa is not usually available in commercial markets. It is most often grown in South Florida. The fruit production peaks around Thanksgiving and some people favor it over cranberries.
