FAQ - 💬

❓ How do I get rid of Cotoneaster horizontalis?

👉 Cutting with stump-treatment Cutting and stump treating is the traditional method of removing and controlling cotoneaster. However, the herbicide is confined to a relatively small surface area of the plant, and it can take several years before the effectiveness of cut and stump treatment is known.

❓ How do you care for a Cotoneaster horizontalis?

👉 Most cotoneasters thrive in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Some require pruning back after fruiting. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure, compost or leaf mould. Some cotoneasters are listed as invasive in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act in England and Wales.

❓ How poisonous is cotoneaster?

👉 Cotoneaster is an evergreen shrub that tends to grow upright with long branches rather than as a bush. Its bright orange berries grow in clusters so thick that the branches cannot be seen. Cotoneaster is poisonous in large amounts and may cause trouble breathing, weakness and seizures.

❓ Which cotoneaster is best for bees?

👉 Cotoneaster splendens is known for attracting bees and birds. It has nectar/pollen rich flowers, is used for nesting materials and provides shelter and habitat.

❓ Should I remove cotoneaster?

👉 Cotoneaster is an invasive plant which out competes native plants but can also be further spread by animals eating the berries it produces. Therefore, it is important to control and eradicate Cotoneaster as soon as it is identified, this can be completed via physical removal or herbicide treatment.

❓ Do cotoneaster have invasive roots?

👉 Eradication Cotoneaster species can be difficult to eradicate because they are often invasive in areas where there are complex plant associations, making it difficult to eradicate only the target plants and not those nearby, combined with the fact that they have tough roots, making them difficult to dig up.

❓ Why has my cotoneaster gone brown?

👉 There are two species of moths with caterpillars that can cause defoliation of Cotoneaster horizontalis and some other plants. The affected parts of the plant are covered in silk webbing produced by the caterpillars and the leaves turn brown as they are grazed.

❓ Do cotoneasters spread?

👉 This cotoneaster can withstand heavy pruning and works well as a hedge, though many gardeners choose to leave it untrimmed because of its unique spreading habit.

❓ Why is cotoneaster banned?

👉 Cotoneaster. Many of the species of cotoneaster available in garden centres are highly invasive - some so much so that it is now illegal to plant them in the countryside or to allow them to 'escape' from your garden!

❓ Is cotoneaster toxic to dogs?

👉 Yes, cotoneaster can be poisonous to dogs. Even though cotoneaster is not on the list of plants that are poisonous by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control, it doesn't mean that it cannot cause harm to your pet.

❓ Do cotoneaster attract wasps?

👉 A really lovely choice among bushes that attract bees is Cotoneaster. That's because, in spring the billowing, off-white blossoms of Cotoneaster lacteus are bee magnets. And, that includes honeybees, yellow jackets, tiny black bees, flies, wasps, and more.
