FAQ - 💬

❓ How do you look after Erigeron?

👉 How to care for Erigeron. Once the flowering period is over, you should deadhead Erigeron and cut back to ground level. It is recommended that you provide a light feed during active growth, taking care not to overwater plants as they dislike excessive wet soil. This is also key during the winter.

❓ Is Erigeron toxic?

👉 Plants in the Erigeron family are mildly toxic, sometimes inducing vomiting and diarrhea. If sufficient quantities of the vegetation are consumed, it can result in dangerous intestinal obstructions. Symptoms of intestinal blockage generally occur around 24 hours after the consumption of something indigestible.

❓ Why is it called fleabane?

👉 The common name “fleabane” is from Old English and it refers to the plant's odor, which supposedly can repel fleas. Similar species: Erigeron pulchellus has fewer ray flowers (40-60).

❓ Can I split Erigeron?

👉 You can also divide erigeron in spring. You may find that the plants look unhappy for a while, but they will perk up in a few days.

❓ When should you cut back Erigeron?

👉 Care and pruning of erigeron In fall, after the blooming or at the beginning of spring, cut back the crown as short as possible. This step aims at snipping all stems down to a height of about 4 inches (10 cm) from the crown head, to stimulate the growth of erigeron while promoting the next flowering.

❓ Does Erigeron need full sun?

👉 It thrives in full sun, but will tolerate some shade.

❓ Does fleabane attract fleas?

👉 Fleabane Daisy As the name suggests, fleas really don't like this cute flower. The plant is also sometimes called Pennyroyal.

❓ What is fleabane used for?

👉 People take Canadian fleabane for swollen airways (bronchitis), sore throat, fever, swelling (inflammation), bleeding from the uterus, fluid retention, urinary tract infections (UTIs), worm infections, tumors, and diarrhea. Canadian fleabane is also used to treat a skin disease called granuloma annulare.

❓ Why is fleabane a problem?

👉 Flaxleaf fleabane affects crop production as it greatly reduces stored water supplies in fallows which affects subsequent crop emergence and growth. This species is also a prolific seed producer that can produce up to 120,000 seeds per plant.

❓ Does Erigeron come back every year?

👉 Plant type: Perennial, this will grow back year after year. Growing conditions: Erigeron can cope with a range of growing conditions, though it will grow best in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil.

❓ Is Erigeron frost hardy?

👉 Erigeron glaucus (seaside daisy) is a vigorous low growing mat forming perennial with greyish green leaves. Flowers on short erect stems in lilac, pink or mauve, with yellow centre from April to October. Grows well in coastal gardens (not hardy in very cold regions).

👉 Erigerons, also known as fleabane, are low-growing, clump-forming plants grown for their pretty, daisy-like flowers. There are many varieties, but the most widely grown is Erigeron karvinskianus, or Mexican fleabane, which bears masses of small flowers over a very long period, often from May to the frosts in autumn.

👉 Erigeron annuus. Its English name, fleabane, is shared with related plants in several other genera. It appears to be derived from a belief that the dried plants repelled fleas or that the plants were poisonous to fleas.

👉 Many of the species within this genus are regarded as weeds; however, more Erigeron species are being cultivated as native plants rise in popularity. Fleabane plants are recognizable due to their hairy stems and leaves, as well as their bright yellow composite flowers which appear in mid-to-late spring.

👉 Some Erigeron species being cultivated include: Erigeron glaucus (seaside daisy), Erigeron peregrinus (subalpine daisy), Erigeron speciosa (showy fleabane), and Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican fleabane).
