Rotbuche wird 80 bis 100 Fuß groß und breitet sich 50 bis 70 Fuß aus. Der Baum wächst langsam, ist schwer zu verpflanzen und bevorzugt einen sonnigen Standort und einen feuchten, leichten Boden. Die wichtigsten ornamentalen Merkmale sind glatte graue Rinde und die Form des Baumes.

Die Rotbuche hat viele Sorten hervorgebracht: "Albovariegata" - Blätter mit weißen Rändern; "Asplenifolia" - geschnittene Blätter; 'Atropunica' - Blätter lila; "Cochleata" - kleinere, löffelförmige Blätter; 'Cuprea' - Blätter kupferfarben; 'Dawycki' - aufrecht wachsende Wuchsform; "Fastigiata" - aufrecht wachsende Wuchsform; 'Laciniata' - Blätter geschnitten, breiter regelmäßiger als Asplenifolia; 'Macrophylla' - größere Blätter; 'Miltononsis' - Leiter aufrecht, Hauptäste horizontal, Seitenäste hängend; "Pendula" - weinende Gewohnheit; 'Purpurea Pendula' - weinend mit lila Blättern; 'Quercifolia' - langsam wachsend, eichenähnlich; 'Riversii' - junges Laub rötlich, dann violett; "Rohanii" - ähnlich wie Laciniata; 'Roseo marginata' - violette Blätter mit hellrosa Rand, im Schatten wachsen, um Blattbrand vorzubeugen, nicht leicht anzubauen; 'Rotundifolia' - Blätter rund; 'Spaethiana' - Blätter lila; 'Tortuosa' - niedrig, ausladend, schirmartig; 'Tricolor' - Blätter grün und weiß mit rosa Rändern; 'Zlatia' - im Frühling golden.
