Du hast einen sogenannten Fireback. Die Hauptfunktion besteht darin, das Maurermaterial im Inneren der Feuerstätte vor den schädlichen Auswirkungen der ständigen Erwärmung und Abkühlung der Herdbrände zu schützen. Der sekundäre Vorteil war die reflektierte Hitze in den Raum.

Diese Firebacks wurden aus Eisen gegossen. Ein Entwurf, gewöhnlich geschnitzt in Holz, wurde in eine Form gedrückt, die verdichteten feuchten Sand enthielt. Ein negatives Bild wurde dann erzeugt und geschmolzenes Eisen wurde in die Form gegossen. Florale Motive, Wappen, historische und allegorische Szenen waren gängige Motive. Einige sind mit dem Datum oder dem Eisenofen / Gießerei-Namen geprägt.

Die meisten der geschmückten Firebacks hatten einen Bogen oder andere Verzierungen an den Töpfen. Firebacks, die quadratisch oder rechteckig sind, ohne jegliche Projektion auf der Oberseite, sind wahrscheinlich geborgene Ofenplatten. Viele von diesen sind von Fünf-Plattenöfen, die in kolonialen Pennsylvania-deutschen Häusern üblich sind. Diese Ofenplatten zeigen oft eine biblische Szene und Verse von Psalmen.
