FAQ - 💬

❓ How tall do Thuja orientalis grow?

👉 Conifer, evergreen shrub or tree, 4-6 ft (1.2-1.8 m) high, 3-5 ft (0.9-1.5 m) wide, [as a tree it may reach 40 ft (12 m) tall], dense, globular to ovoid, with branchlets held vertically and nearly parallel in arrangement. Bark thin, red-brown, separating into papery scales.

❓ What is the difference between Thuja occidentalis and Thuja orientalis?

👉 The easiest method to tell the two species apart is to look at the orientation of the foliage. If the foliage is held in horizontal planes, it is Thuja occidentalis, if it is held in vertical planes than it is Thuja orientalis.

❓ Is Thuja occidentalis fast growing?

👉 According to our Native Plant Database Thuja occidentalis (Arborvitae) grows "slowly" but that is a relative term.

❓ How fast does oriental arborvitae grow?

👉 Arborvitae trees are incredibly slow-growing, with the exception of just a couple of types. Although some reach large sizes, they only grow at a rate of approximately 12 inches per year. However, this number can decrease, depending on soil types and sun exposure.

❓ Is arborvitae and Thuja the same?

👉 While different suppliers may refer to this tree as arborvitae 'Green Giant' or Thuja 'Green Giant,' they are the same species. This tall, narrow tree makes an excellent privacy screen or specimen planting.

❓ Why is Thuja called the Tree of Life?

👉 For some, the tree of life symbolizes immortality and for others it symbolizes a larger connection to life within the cosmos. In arboriculture though, “the tree of life” is just another common name for the eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis).

❓ Does Thuja stay green in winter?

👉 Do Thuja Green Giants turn brown in winter? No. These evergreens stay green year-round, but do take on a deeper, bronzer hue in the winter.

❓ What is the best arborvitae for privacy?

👉 Emerald Green Arborvitae is the ultimate choice for a dense privacy hedge. With an Emerald Green hedge, there is zero chance of seeing anything through it. It grows slowly and requires very infrequent pruning.

❓ What is the best time of year to plant arborvitae?

👉 springWhen to Plant Arborvitae. Most evergreen plants, such as arborvitae, are planted when they are not actively growing for best results. Depending on where you live, they may be planted in late winter if soils are workable, or you may have to wait until early spring when the earth has thawed.

❓ How far from a fence should I plant a Thuja Green Giant?

👉 If your screen or hedge is against a building, plant 6 feet from the wall, to protect the foundations. If you are planting against a fence, plant 3 feet from the fence so that the lower part of the plants remains bushy and the hedge remains on your side of the property line.

❓ Does arborvitae need sun or shade?

👉 full sunEmerald Green Arborvitae thrive in full sun but can grow in partial shade as well. Too much shade will lead to sparse growth. To flourish, these trees need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
