Nach Jahren der Vernachlässigung hatte der Halbbungalow aus dem Jahr 1928 ein stark beschädigtes Äußeres. In der Tat musste die gesamte vordere Veranda, von den Fundamenten zu den vorhandenen Dachsparren, gehen. Das Interieur war nicht viel besser. Eine Reihe von Änderungen im Laufe der Zeit hatte die vorderen Räume von Charakter und ein Gefühl der Privatsphäre entblößt.

Jerry Duprey und Mark Uhen wollten eine Verjüngungskur, die ihr "Craftsman Craftsman" Haus in einen detailreichen Arts & Crafts Bungalow verwandeln würde. Der Architekt Michael Klement und der Baumeister Bruce Curtis von Washtenaw Woodwrights gaben ihnen genau das, zu einem Preis von etwa 170 US-Dollar pro Quadratfuß.

Durch den Umzug der Haustür in die Mitte des Hauses konnte der Architekt ein Kurzzeitstudium durchführen.

"Unser sorgfältiges Studium des authentischen, alten Bungalow- und Arts & Crafts-Designs führte zu einem gruppierten, kreuzgebundenen Säulen-Thema, das innen und außen zu einem vereinheitlichenden Element des Designs werden sollte", erklärt Klement.

Im Inneren wurden die Räume im ersten Stock neu organisiert, was zur Verlegung der Eingangstür führte. Neue Balken wurden hinzugefügt, um strukturelle Bedenken zu beheben. Authentische, zeitgemäße Leuchten, Hardware und Tapeten runden das Interieur ab.

Die Gemeinschaftsbereiche im Haus waren bei früheren Renovierungsarbeiten geöffnet worden, wodurch die Zimmer von Stil und Charakter abgerissen wurden. Die Besitzer behielten das offene Gefühl, aber umformieren den L-förmigen Raum in drei verschiedene Räume. Zukünftige Pläne beinhalten die Umwandlung von drei winzigen Schlafzimmern und einem Bad im zweiten Stock in eine Master-Suite und ein kleines Gästezimmer.

"Es gibt keinen Grund, warum eine Renovierung die Auflagen und Probleme bei der Raumplanung nicht lösen kann", sagt Klement. "Die Verwendung von Details im Stil der Zeit schließt eine zeitgemäße Nutzung des Raums nicht aus." Dieses Haus hat tatsächlich den Charme eines intakten Originals.
