FAQ - 💬

❓ Do heucheras prefer sun or shade?

👉 Most heucheras thrive in partial or dappled shade, where their bright leaf colours are particularly valuable. Darker-leaved cultivars can often tolerate more sun, and it may even enhance their colour, but paler-leaved plants can easily get bleached or scorched in a bright spot.

❓ Where is the best place to plant heucheras?

👉 dappled shadeMost heucheras do best in dappled shade. Plant them in moist but well-drained soil, or in a loam-base compost if growing in pots. In summer, feed fortnightly with a tomato feed and keep out of direct sun.

❓ How do you care for a Heuchera sanguinea?

👉 sanguinea, don't tolerate clayey or acidic soils. Other than keeping them regularly watered during their first year of growth, heucheras don't require much care. Divide heuchera clumps as needed, or every three or four years. Deadhead the flowers, to promote more blooms, which may continue into summer.

❓ Do Heuchera come back every year?

👉 To start with, coral bells are perennials and will come back year after year. They will also multiply on their own and after three or four years and may need to be thinned out. But it is a joy to have a plant that grows so well you have to "weed it out" every so many years!

❓ Do heucheras dieback in winter?

👉 Are heuchera evergreen plants? Heuchera is an evergreen perennial plant. They retain the majority of their foliage throughout the winter months, meaning all you have to do in the springtime is some minor maintenance clearing up any dead leaves.

❓ Do heucheras need cutting back?

👉 After a couple of years your heuchera may start to become rather clumped and leggy. When you part the leaves, you'll discover woody stems that lead back to the crown of the plant. To prune, cut the stems back to a just above buds of fresh growth at the top of the crown.

❓ Do slugs eat Heuchera?

👉 Heuchera thrive in British gardens. They are tough, slugs or snails don't bother them, and they will tolerate just about any position including being planted in raised beds or pots.

❓ Should Heuchera be cut back for winter?

👉 Heucheras: Do not cut back. The semi-evergreen growth protects the plants from the temperature changes and accompanying heaving common in shallow rooted plants.

❓ What do you do with Heuchera in the winter?

👉 Cut the plant back to about 3 inches (8 cm.) in early winter if you live in a cold climate. If your area enjoys mild winters, you don't need to cut the plant back. However, this is a good time to trim damaged growth and dead leaves.

❓ Do heucheras like lots of water?

👉 Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Heuchera is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Provide extra water during hot spells.

❓ What does Heuchera look like?

👉 Heuchera have small bunches of flowers that grow on a long stalk, or thyrse. These flowers are delicate and colorful, but are not very flashy. And while they can be lovely and add a nice accent to the plant, the relative insignificance of the flowers allows the foliage to really stand out on its own. Photo by Matt Suwak.

❓ How do you use Heuchera pulchra?

👉 Use this plant for edging, along border fronts, or massing as ground cover. Heuchera sanguinea var. pulchra is a dwarf subspecies, only 8" tall, that grows with fuschia-pink flowers in the mountains of Arizona. It will grow in full sun but does best in dappled shade with well-drained soil.
