Während seiner Restaurierung eines ca. 1820 New York Bauernhaus, Antiquitätenhändler Tim Northup suchte Inspiration in Museen und historischen Häusern - darunter das Bauernmuseum und Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, nicht weit von seinem Platz in Oneonta. Heute rühmt sich die Stadt mit etwa 1.770 Einwohnern - die Heimat der Baseball Hall of Fame - auch das Cooperstown Graduate Program von SUNY Oneonta, das Museumsfachleute ausbildet.

Das Bauernmuseum ist eine lebendige Geschichtsstätte. Sein historisches Dorf aus dem 19. Jahrhundert besteht aus 24 Gebäuden, die aus dem ganzen Land hierher gezogen und restauriert wurden: das Greek Revival Dimmick House stammt aus dem Jahr 1839, das More House aus dem Jahre 1839. 1818, Teile der Bump Tavern gehen auf 1795 zurück. Das Fenimore Art Museum begann 1899 als New York State Historical Association. ein Mandat bestand darin, Manuskripte, Gemälde und Objekte der Staatsgeschichte zu archivieren.
