Needlecasts

FAQ - 💬

❓ How do you treat Needlecast?

👉 Consider treating affected trees with fungicides containing copper as the active ingredient (e.g., Bordeaux mixture) or chlorothalonil. Treatments will not cure existing infections, but can prevent additional infections. Apply treatments every three to four weeks starting as new needles emerge in the spring.

❓ What is the best fungicide for needle cast?

👉 chlorothalonilNeedle cast diseases can be effectively controlled with fungicides containing chlorothalonil. For Rhizosphaera needle cast, two properly-timed applications per year for at least two consecutive years, and sometimes three years, is required for control.

❓ What causes Needlecast?

👉 Rhizosphaera needle cast is caused by the fungus Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii. The fungus survives winter on living and recently killed needles. In spring through early autumn, spores spread to new needles within the tree or in neighboring trees via splashing water.

❓ What is Needlecast?

👉 Browning foliage and needle drop are the primary symptoms A broad range of fungal diseases that cause foliar discoloration and needle loss in conifers are known as needlecasts and needle blights. While visually unappealing, these diseases rarely lead to tree mortality on their own.

❓ Can trees recover from Needlecast?

👉 The tree becomes unattractive and may look as though it is dying, but don't despair. Rhizosphaera and Stigmina, the two most common needle cast diseases of spruce trees, are treatable. You can have your tree looking lush and beautiful again within a few years by following a program of needle cast treatment.

❓ Can Needlecast be cured?

👉 Management of Rhizosphaera needle cast Once needles are infected they cannot be healed or cured and will eventually fall off of the tree. While there are fungicides that help to manage this disease, the main use is in protecting new needles from the fungal pathogen.

❓ Can trees recover from needle cast?

❓ Can needle blight be cured?

👉 Dothistroma needle blight can be controlled, but not cured, with sprays of fungicide. As with any needle blight disease, the aim of spraying the tree is to break the annual cycle of infection in the new needles. Multiple seasons of treatment are needed before results are noticeable in the tree.

❓ What is the best fungicide for evergreen trees?

👉 Evergreen Needle Cast Fungicides: Small trees can be sprayed with a product containing the active ingredient chlorothalonil. It is best applied when the fungus is most active during the springtime when needles are halfway elongated.

❓ When do you spray Needlecast?

👉 Begin needlecast treatments in spring when new needles are 1/2-2 inches long. In the Northeast and Northcentral states, start spraying for Lophodermium needlecast in mid-July and early August. Once treatments begin, reapply Daconil® fungicide every three to four weeks until dry weather stabilizes.

❓ Does needle cast spread?

👉 Rhizosphaera Needle Cast spreads when infected needles and branches fall to the ground and produce spores that can be blown and spread to other healthy trees.

❓ What is needlecast disease?

👉 Most needlecast diseases can be found in the inner canopy near the bottom of the tree where there is more shading, less air movement, increased humidity and longer periods of leaf wetness. As the disease progresses, it spreads outward and upwards, gaining speed as the tree becomes more stressed.

❓ What are the symptoms of needlecasts and Needle blights?

👉 Discoloration of two-year old needles on an Austrian pine. Non-uniform discoloration of Douglas-fir needles. Browning foliage and needle drop are the primary symptoms of needlecasts and needle blights. Discoloration tends to develop in blotches or bands, rather than changing color uniformly.

❓ What does needlecast look like on a tree?

👉 These "fruiting structures" may be black, orange-red, or tan, depending upon the fungus. Other fungi that grow on dead or dying needles but do not cause needlecast may form similar structures. Finding a fungal fruiting structure on a dead needle is not proof that the tree has a needlecast disease.

❓ What is Rhizosphaera needle cast?

👉 Rhizosphaera needle cast is a fungal disease of spruce trees that causes needles to turn brown and fall off. Trees stressed from drought, poor planting practices or other factors are more likely to suffer from Rhizosphaera needle cast.
