FAQ - 💬

❓ Are spittle bugs harmful to plants?

👉 Spittlebug nymphs pierce the plant stems and suck plant juices. In most cases, especially on annuals and perennials, spittlebug feeding is not damaging to plants. If too many spittlebugs are present, feeding can cause leaves to lose their shape.

❓ Are there spittlebugs in Australia?

👉 Spittlebugs (family Aphrophoridae) are represented in Australia by a number of small to medium sized brownish sap-feeding insects. The name "spittlebugs" comes from the ability of each nymph to produce a mass of bubbly spittle in which it lives and feeds.

❓ How do I get rid of spittlebugs UK?

👉 Control

  1. Apart from producing the 'spit' these insects have little detrimental effect on plants and should be tolerated as part of the biodiversity that gardens support.
  2. If considered unsightly, they can be wiped off by hand or dislodged with a jet of water from a garden hose.

❓ What is the purpose of a Spittlebug?

👉 Spittlebugs feed on plant sap and then excrete bubbly foam to create a protective fortress around themselves. Later, they emerge as adult froghoppers.

👉 In fact, the tell-tale sign of spittlebugs is plant foam, and will normally appear in the plant where the leaf attaches to the stem or where two branches meet. The spittlebug nymphs make bubbles out of a liquid they secrete from their back ends (thus not really spittle). They get their name due to the foamy substance looking like spittle.

❓ Should I be worried about spittlebugs?

👉 Spittle is coming to an end, as the newly-hatched spittlebugs mature into adults, but scientists are keen to hear of further sightings. They say spittlebugs are not plant pests in their own right - and part of our native fauna - and people should not harm them in any way.

❓ Is a spittlebug the same as a leafhopper?

👉 They are a wingless, green creature at this point and are almost invisible inside the spittle. Although the names are used interchangeably, spittlebugs and leafhoppers are not the same insect. Spittlebugs are related to leafhoppers but have a broader body. The adults are dull-colored tan, brown or black and about 1/8 to 1/4-inch long, with wings.

❓ What is a'spittlebug'?

👉 Citizen scientists have provided a wealth of new data on a curious insect that makes blobs of spittle on plants. More than 11,000 sightings of the spittlebug, or froghopper, have been recorded across the UK, with the south of England proving a stronghold. The information will be used to prepare for the threat of the plant disease, Xylella.
